Prayer for the counties of Ireland

March 2025

Motto:  "Righteousness and Justice". Irish: Ceart agus Cóir

Galway is in the province of Connacht. A translation of its Gaelic name is “City of Foreigners” reflecting that outside the Pale around Dublin this was the only other part of Ireland before the Plantation where an ‘anglified’ culture was strong.

Also known as “The City of the Tribes” because of the 14 leading families who controlled affairs there form medieval times.

There are several Gaeltacht areas in County Galway. (Gaeltacht = Irish-speaking regions remaining in Ireland, areas where the Irish language is, or was until recently, the primary spoken language of the majority of the community). Schools in the Gaeltacht areas use the Irish language as their primary teaching language. The Aran islands are part of the Gaeltacht too.

Co. Galway is home to the Twelve Bens mountain range and numerous lakes.

There are a number of ICT companies based in Galway.

PRAYER:

One of the European Cities of Culture in 2020 (extended into 2021). Very diverse, syncretic and New Age cultural influences impacting young people in particular. Pray for the outreach and evangelism ministries in the area.

Pray that God would do a work amongst the children of Galway, by a work of his Spirit.

Pray for the churches in Galway to be blessed by God so they can be a blessing to the local community.

Pray that believers would be courageous in sharing their faith.

Homelessness – lack of new social housing a major problem.

Traveller – settled community issues. Pray for understanding and resolution.

Anti-social behaviour especially in Galway city centre. Pray for the release of people from drug and alcohol addictions.

Migrant and asylum seekers – significant challenges (housing, jobs, etc) but pronounced opportunities (renewal of a number of Christian churches etc).

Heartache of Tuam (mother and baby unit) – much healing needed. Has turned many people away from their faith. Restoration of faith needed.
