Lent Day 31

Today’s reflection from a friend Keith Lockhart.

Only one thing is necessary……

As we’ve been following the golden threads of faith in Psalm 23 this lent I've been reminded of an experience some years ago on a trip to a beautiful Swiss town near Geneva.

In the midst of the noise and clamour of traffic and tourists, suddenly a traditionally dressed shepherd appeared walking through the square and following a few paces behind him were a huge flock of sheep calmly following as he gently called to them.

For the first time Jesus words in John 10 made sense,

“I know my sheep and my sheep know me , My sheep listen to my voice”

My previous impressions were based more on the one man and his dog model where the sheep are driven in a certain direction by the shepherd.

I know that often the voices that I hear can lead to my thoughts and feelings  wandering off in unhealthy directions as the clamour of what is happening in our world threatens to overwhelm. Yet all of us like Mary at the feet of Jesus can chose the one thing necessary ..to listen to his voice.

As in Isaiah 30:21 as we walk through our days ..whether we turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you , saying ’This is the way, walk in it’

Holy Spirit please lead us in this season to follow your voice in each moment, hour, day, and week such that we would be calm and assured, as we follow you,  that the path of faith that we are on will keep us close to you and our hearts at peace
